With a population of around 910, Superior offers a reprieve from interstate travel. The Mineral County Museum offers information on local industry, as well as area history with display subjects including John Mullan and the Mullan Road. Superior was named in 1869, after the founders' hometown of Superior, Wisconsin. The post office was established in 1871 with Silas R. Smith as postmaster. Located along the Clark Fork River and the route of the old Mullan Trail, Superior is the site of one of the largest gold strikes that helped settle the West. The town's first settlers were several thousand miners who converged on Cedar Creek to earn their fortunes. Long after that strike played out, mining remained a mainstay of the economy. Mining, along with the development of logging and Forest Service activities contribute to the area's interesting history. Mineral County is bursting with opportunity. The people are hospitable and the weather is appealing. There are a number of charming communities within the county. Consisting of 1,223 sq. mi., the bulk of the land is situated within the Lolo National Forest, in a narrow valley separated by the St. Regis Rivers & Clark Fork Rivers. The Clark Fork River carries more water than any other river in Montana. The county is significantly forested with ponderosa pine, lodge pole, fir, cedar, larch, and white pine trees. High in minerals, the county has many unpatented mining claims. Mineral County offers hunting, hiking, sightseeing, fishing, and camping opportunities, as well as incredible white water rafting. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, and ice skating. Well maintained winter roads facilitate access many locations providing winter fun! Summer in Mineral County offers some of the best trout fishing in the country! From easy river access areas, to isolated hike-in lakes amidst high alpine forests, your fishing choices are endless. Sightseeing, wildlife photography, swimming, camping, biking, and just about any other outdoor activity you can think of will fill your days quickly. At the end of the day, rest comes easy with comfortable nightly temperatures; the smell of clean mountain air, and the sound of breezes in the pines to lull you into a restful slumber.
