Of all the places to explore in Northwest Montana, Glacier National Park is perhaps the most spectacular. Glacier has it all; magnificent waterfalls, stunning mountain peaks, abundant wildlife, and an endless variety of activities available to visitors. Comprised of 1,600 square miles with elevations ranging from 3,150 to 10,466 feet, Glacier's majestic mountains and vast valleys provide a range of different habitats. Over 260 species of birds & more than 70 species of mammals call this park home. There are many ways to enjoy a day at Glacier, from fishing, hiking, rafting, boating, horseback riding, and golfing, to just driving along the "Going to the Sun Road" for miles & miles of breathtaking mountain scenery. From Thompson Falls, one can drive to Glacier and back in one day, and still have plenty of time to drive the entire park, as well as take in a few hikes! For those wanting to explore the park more thoroughly, an overnight trip may be a good idea. Weather at the park can be unpredictable. At any time of year, there is the possibility of warm sunshine as well as snow. Snow can be seen anytime throughout the summer, although the daytime highs usually average around 77°F, and often dip below 50°F after sunset. Early Summer through early fall is the most popular time to visit Glacier, since "Going to the Sun Road" is most likely to be open during those times. September is a great time to visit, due to the comfortable weather, abundant fall colors, and smaller crowds!
